J91540 Product Description

Overview

J91540 (cast grade CA6NM) is a low-carbon soft-martensitic cast chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel. This datasheet presents the material within the American (ACI / ASTM / ASME) standard system.

With about 13% chromium, 4% nickel and a small molybdenum addition and very low carbon, 415 (UNS S41500, forging grade F6NM) combines high strength and toughness with good corrosion resistance and weldability. The high nickel and molybdenum allow the carbon to be kept low, giving a soft-martensitic structure with toughness comparable to austenitic grades while retaining the strength of a martensitic steel. It is readily weldable with preheat and post-weld tempering, and is supplied quenched and tempered. It offers good resistance to mild acids, alkalis and moderate chloride concentrations, with service to about 300 °C.

Typical applications include hydroelectric turbine runners and parts, pump and propeller shafts, valve bodies and seats, compressor components, and oilfield and pressure-vessel hardware (including sour-service per NACE MR0175).

1. Physical Properties

Property Value Unit
Density 7.7 g/cm³
Melting range 1400–1450 °C
Elastic modulus 200 GPa
Coefficient of thermal expansion (20–100 °C) 10.5 µm/m·°C
Thermal conductivity (20 °C) 25.0 W/m·K
Specific heat (20 °C) 460 J/kg·K
Structure Soft-martensitic (cast)

2. Chemical Composition (wt %)

Element Symbol Min % Max % Role in Alloy
Iron Fe Balance Base element
Chromium Cr 11.5 14.0 Corrosion resistance; martensite former
Nickel Ni 3.5 5.5 Toughness; structure control
Molybdenum Mo 0.50 1.00 Pitting / corrosion resistance
Manganese Mn 0.50 1.00 Deoxidiser
Silicon Si 0.60 Deoxidiser
Carbon C 0.06 Low (weldability, soft martensite)
Phosphorus P 0.030 Residual impurity
Sulphur S 0.030 Residual impurity

3. Mechanical Properties

Quenched-and-tempered condition, per ASTM A487 for cast grade CA6NM (J91540).

Condition Property Value
Q&T Tensile strength (UTS) ≥755 MPa
Q&T 0.2% yield strength ≥550 MPa
Q&T Elongation at break ≥15 %
Q&T Hardness ≤285 HB (≤23 HRC for sour service)
Elastic modulus 200 GPa

Confirm against the mill test report. For sour (H₂S) service per NACE MR0175, hardness is limited to ~23 HRC max.

4. Corrosion Resistance

Environment Performance Notes
Atmospheric / general Very Good Better than 410/420; Mo addition
Mild acids / alkalis Good At low concentrations
Chloride pitting Moderate Improved by molybdenum vs 410
Sour service (H₂S) Good Per NACE MR0175 at controlled hardness
Stress-corrosion cracking Very Good Soft-martensitic; good resistance

Corrosion resistance is well above the standard martensitic 410/420 grades owing to the higher nickel and molybdenum and low carbon; suitable for sour service when hardness is controlled.

5. Heat Treatment

A low-carbon soft-martensitic grade; supplied quenched and tempered.

Solution Treatment (Austenitise + Quench) Austenitise at approximately 1000–1050 °C and air or oil quench to form soft martensite.

Temper Temper at approximately 580–620 °C; a double temper is often used to transform retained austenite and develop the best combination of strength and toughness. For sour service, temper to limit hardness to ~23 HRC.

6. Weldability and Joining

Readily weldable by all standard techniques; preheat to 100–200 °C and post-weld temper. Matching filler or AWS E410NiMo is used. Avoid hydrogen- or carbon-bearing shielding gas.

Welding Process Applicability Filler / Consumable
GTAW / TIG Very Good AWS E410NiMo / ER410NiMo
GMAW / MIG Good ER410NiMo
SMAW / stick Good E410NiMo electrode

Preheat 100–200 °C; post-weld temper (or anneal) to restore toughness and corrosion resistance.

7. Machinability and Fabrication

Machining Guidelines

Parameter Recommendation
Machinability Moderate; similar to QT carbon steel of same hardness (~23 HRC)
Tooling Carbide tooling; rigid setup
Coolant Ample flood coolant

Forming Processes

Process Notes
Cold forming Limited (high strength)
Hot forming / forging ~1150–950 °C; quench and temper afterward
